Stripe will reportedly acquire AI gateway startup OpenRouter for $7B+ ↗
Stripe has reportedly finalized a deal to buy OpenRouter for more than $7 billion, giving the payments giant a major foothold in the infrastructure connecting developers to AI models.
OpenRouter offers a single access point to more than 400 models and claimed 8 million users after its recent funding round. There’s a neat bit of symmetry here too - its CEO previously described the company as basically "Stripe for AI." Now Stripe itself wants it.
The reported price is especially eye-popping given that OpenRouter was valued at about $1.3 billion during its latest funding round. Stripe itself hasn't confirmed the deal publicly.
Anthropic CEO says AI backlash is ‘fundamentally a crisis of trust’ ↗
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei says growing hostility toward AI isn't mainly the result of executives talking too much about catastrophic risks. He thinks the deeper problem is that people simply don't trust tech companies, governments or the industry.
Amodei also admitted something fairly significant: AI companies haven't delivered enough of the enormous tangible benefits they've promised.
His argument was basically that talking about AI curing cancer has become a cliché. Curing cancer itself would be another matter. That might change minds. Hard to argue with that one.
Instagram promised to remove harassing Meta glasses videos. I keep finding them. ↗
Instagram's attempt to police harassment filmed using Meta's AI glasses appears rather uneven. Business Insider found dozens of pickup and prank videos still circulating after Instagram chief Adam Mosseri said harassing content filmed with the glasses would be removed.
After Meta was sent more than 20 examples, it removed several - but other similar clips remained available.
The bigger issue is getting awkward fast: wearable AI cameras make recording strangers almost frictionless, while moderation still seems to be chasing the problem with one shoe missing.
Claude Outage: Authentication Issue Hits Claude Code, API, claude.ai ↗
Claude suffered an authentication outage lasting roughly 36 minutes, affecting claude.ai, Claude Code, Claude's API, Cowork and Anthropic's developer platform.
Users experienced login failures and some requests failed while Anthropic investigated and deployed a fix. Services were subsequently restored.
Anthropic hadn't publicly disclosed a root cause beyond identifying the authentication problem, so anything more specific would be guesswork... or so it seems.
‘I see the incredible promise’: on set of an AI film shoot as new studios embrace controversial tech ↗
A new generation of AI-first film studios is starting to challenge Hollywood's traditional production model. Promise, backed by Google, Disney and venture investors, is using generative AI for backgrounds, effects and synthetic performers.
Its horror project Touch Grass combines human actors with AI-generated environments that can appear on the director's monitor during shooting. Executives involved estimate hybrid AI productions could cut costs substantially.
Supporters think that could unleash smaller independent studios and encourage more creative risk-taking. Actors, writers and directors remain deeply worried about jobs and authenticity - unsurprisingly, Hollywood's AI argument is getting hotter rather than quieter.
The first anti-AI protester to be jailed has a message for OpenAI, Anthropic and Meta: ‘Regain your humanity’ ↗
Retired teacher Wynd Kaufmyn was jailed after taking part in a protest that blocked access to OpenAI's headquarters as activists demanded an end to the race toward artificial superintelligence.
Kaufmyn argued that increasingly powerful systems present risks serious enough to justify civil disobedience. A jury rejected her necessity defence, while prosecutors argued protesters cannot endanger public safety to advance their cause.
The case is a pretty striking sign of how AI anxiety is escaping research papers and policy hearings - it's becoming a tangible protest movement, with jail sentences now attached.
FAQ
Why would Stripe want to acquire OpenRouter?
OpenRouter gives developers a single access point to hundreds of AI models, making it an important layer between model providers and applications. A reported Stripe acquisition would therefore push the payments company further into AI infrastructure. The deal has not been publicly confirmed by Stripe, but the reported price of more than $7 billion would represent a major leap from OpenRouter’s latest reported valuation.
Why does Anthropic’s CEO think people are turning against AI?
Dario Amodei argues that the backlash against AI is fundamentally tied to a lack of trust in technology companies, governments and the wider industry. He also acknowledged that AI companies have not yet delivered enough of the enormous, tangible benefits they have discussed publicly. His argument suggests that visible, practical breakthroughs could do more to improve public confidence than ambitious predictions about what AI may eventually accomplish.
What happened during the latest Claude outage?
Claude experienced an authentication-related outage that affected several Anthropic services, including claude.ai, Claude Code, the Claude API, Cowork and its developer platform. Users reported login problems and failed requests while Anthropic investigated the issue. Service was restored after roughly 36 minutes, though Anthropic had not publicly provided a more detailed technical root cause beyond identifying an authentication problem.
Why are Meta AI glasses creating moderation problems for Instagram?
Meta’s AI glasses make it far easier to record people from a first-person perspective, creating new challenges when footage involves harassment, pranks or unwanted interactions. Instagram said harassing material filmed with the glasses would be removed, yet similar videos reportedly remained available. The issue highlights how wearable cameras can make content creation almost frictionless while platform moderation still depends on consistently identifying and enforcing the rules.
How is generative AI changing filmmaking and Hollywood production?
Some AI-focused studios are using generative AI for backgrounds, visual effects and synthetic performers alongside traditional actors and crews. Projects such as Touch Grass are experimenting with AI-generated environments that can appear during production. Supporters believe hybrid workflows could reduce costs and give smaller studios more room to take creative risks, while actors, writers and directors remain concerned about employment, authenticity and the wider impact on filmmaking.
