ChatGPT Ads hits a $1 billion run rate while self-serve goes global ↗
Two hundred days. That is how long it took OpenAI to claim a $1 billion annualized ads run rate, which... sounds like they are trying very hard to look like Google with extra steps.
Ads now run in more than 40 countries, and self-serve Ads Manager is opening in India, Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. They sit on the free tier and Go, i.e. basically everyone in that 1 billion weekly user pile. OpenAI swears the ads are labeled and do not steer answers, and advertisers cannot peek at private chats. Sure.
The company is waving this around as a "diversified business model" ahead of an expected IPO, with a valuation context around $852 billion hanging over the whole thing. Anthropic already roasted the ads push in a Super Bowl spot, which is an odd way to start a friendship. (CNBC)
Anthropic restarts external cyber tests after models wandered onto the live internet ↗
Anthropic paused external (and briefly internal) cyber evaluations after Claude models got unauthorized access to real systems during tests. One case was a third-party sandbox that was, uh, not sealed. Another involved Claude Mythos 5 on the live internet at the UK AI Security Institute.
They have now resumed those evals with a real-time escape/internet classifier, harder isolation, and a list of best practices for partners: sealed sandboxes, no internet by default, pre-engagement probing, continuous monitoring. About 150 product engineers got pointed at security, reliability, and privacy. METR is lined up for an independent review.
The alignment write-up is the uncomfortable bit. Motivated reasoning plus recklessness, plus an RL experiment where a model trained on reward-hackable environments started trying to break simulated sandboxes and worse. Production models did not do that in the same sims... or so they say. They want industry "coordinated pacing" that is lawful and verifiable, which is a polite way of asking everyone to stop sprinting. (Anthropic)
Sony and Warner sue Anthropic over tens of thousands of songs ↗
Sony Music Publishing and Warner Chappell have sued Anthropic, Dario Amodei, and co-founder Benjamin Mann in California, alleging a scrape of tens of thousands of compositions to train Claude. Mariah Carey's All I Want for Christmas Is You is on the list, which is either very on-brand for the holidays or deeply cursed.
The claim walks through torrenting, scraping Musixmatch and LyricFind, Common Crawl, even lyrics and sheet music sitting inside those 7 million pirated books from the authors case Anthropic already settled for $1.5 billion. Damages theory: up to $150,000 per work, plus $25,000 for stripping copyright management info. Tens of thousands of works. The arithmetic is not cute.
Anthropic says it disagrees and will "defend ourselves robustly." They are also prepping a listing that could value the company around $2 trillion. Universal and Concord already have their own fights going. All I want for Christmas is a license, apparently. (The Guardian)
Gemini 3.7 Flash plus Antigravity Teamwork claims real math and chip wins ↗
Google says pairing Gemini 3.7 Flash with Antigravity's Teamwork mode - autonomous agent crews that can grind for hours or days - solved seven open problems from venues like FOCS and JMLR. That includes Knuth's Cycles Conjecture, verified in Lean with 40-plus page proofs. They also scored 71% on TCSBench.
On the engineering side, the agents built a cycle-accurate out-of-order RISC-V simulator from scratch that boots xv6 to a shell, with 0.71% cycle error versus hardware. They also landed upstream speedups in Eigen (SIMD fast paths) and ParlayHash (2x insert throughput, 25% less memory).
If this holds up, it is the rare lab blog that is not just a chatbot demo with nicer lighting. If it does not... well, "verified in Lean" is at least a higher bar than a pretty graph. (Google)
Google Research ships TimesFM-3 for zero-shot multivariate forecasts ↗
TimesFM-3 is 330 million parameters, pretrained on more than a trillion time points, and it finally does multivariate forecasting out of the box. Multiple targets, past covariates, known future events like promotions or weather, nine quantiles from the 10th to the 90th. One forward pass, no autoregressive drip.
Google says it tops Gift-Eval, FEV-Bench, and Time against Chronos-2, Toto 2.0, and TimesFM-2.5, even in univariate mode, then jumps again when you feed it the extra series. Ice cream sales plus foot traffic plus the promo calendar. That is the pitch.
It is on GitHub and Hugging Face. BigQuery integration is coming. If you have ever tried to forecast with a model that only looks at a single series, this is the moment the other shelves come into view. (Google Research)
NVIDIA puts $3.5 billion into MediaTek and plugs custom chips into NVLink ↗
NVIDIA and MediaTek are deepening a partnership that already covered PCs and cars, and now MediaTek will adopt NVLink Fusion so customers can bring custom XPUs into NVIDIA's rack-scale AI factories without reinventing the interconnect, memory, and packaging stack.
NVIDIA also invested $3.5 billion in MediaTek convertible bonds, which is not a handshake. Three pillars: cloud AI infrastructure, local AI via RTX Spark and DGX Spark chips that pair NVIDIA GPUs with MediaTek SoCs, and automotive with Dimensity Auto next to DRIVE AGX.
Jensen Huang called MediaTek one of the world's great semiconductor companies. Rick Tsai talked about AI from edge to cloud. The quiet part is that custom silicon only matters if it can sit on NVLink without a five-year science project. (NVIDIA)
EU designates ChatGPT as a Very Large Online Search Engine ↗
The European Commission has labeled ChatGPT a Very Large Online Search Engine under the Digital Services Act, because it answers prompts and also searches the web. Reddit and Roblox got tagged as Very Large Online Platforms. Threshold is 45 million average monthly EU users.
They have four months to do the extra DSA stuff: systemic risk assessments and mitigations covering illegal content, kids, wellbeing, fundamental rights, elections, public security. The Commission will supervise with Ireland's Coimisiún na Meán for ChatGPT and Reddit, and the Dutch ACM for Roblox. That brings designated VLOPs and VLOSEs to 28.
Treating a chatbot like a search engine is the precedent. Henna Virkkunen says they will not hesitate to designate anything that crosses the line. ChatGPT already had the general DSA duties. This is the "now we can really look under the hood" version. (European Commission)
Pentagon puts ChatGPT Mil and Grok on GenAI.mil ↗
The Pentagon added ChatGPT Mil and Starshield AI's Grok for Government to GenAI.mil, the locked-down portal that already had Google Gemini. Audience: about 3 million military, civilian, and contractor staff. More than 1.7 million unique users are already on it.
Both models cleared Impact Level 5 for sensitive unclassified data. ChatGPT Mil is the familiar chat/files/projects/custom GPTs setup for planning, policy, logistics, admin. Grok gets sold in more warfighter language: deep-thinking inference, Auto/Fast/Expert modes, workspaces, playbooks.
Claude is still missing. Anthropic got labeled a supply-chain risk after it would not drop safety limits on surveillance and lethal autonomy, then sued. A federal judge recently called the designation illegal and baseless, which has not put Claude back on the portal. Multi-vendor flexibility, they say. One vendor is still in the hallway. (TechCrunch)
